Our Story
The "Creator"
Hi, I'm Melody!
A deeply passionate, word-loving, art-making, forever-learning, hopeful gal in her twenties, who’s often been named an “old soul”. At my core, I’m a creator. I savour conversations with seniors like I savour my grandmother’s infamous rhubarb pie and want to show up extravagantly for them – to show them how much they matter and show the world too. I'm also a student (of both university and life) and a local artist looking to connect all these wonderful things into one: Legacy Squares!

I hope that legacy squares may offer you some of the same profound truth and encouragement they've offered me. Forever preaching that you should talk to a senior today :)

The Inspiration
Legacy Squares was born out of a sweet creative writing group at The Good Companions Seniors Centre. What began as a simple group that met weekly to partake in creative writing activities and discussion quickly emerged into something profound. There was a clear interest in writing about personal life experiences and reflections, and thus the concept of Legacy Writing emerged.

But how could we turn our pieces into something that would not only be read by others, but tangibly CARRIED and constantly REMEMBERED?
... Legacy Squares,
of course!
Legacy Squares are infused with decades of life, mounds of wisdom, and an immense hope to carry them far. Each message was carefully crafted by a senior based on their unique life journey.
Let these small message cards inspire us, encourage us to reflect, and remind us of the greater truths in life.

The Creative Process
Our seniors each designed their own custom deck of messages. They identified key messages that felt important to the legacies they'd like to leave behind ...
Then, Melody (a local artist) painted watercolour portraits of each senior, along with custom designs for each Legacy Square.

At the end, each senior chose a couple favourite Legacy Squares from their own deck and we assembled them all into a combined, master deck to be shared with the community!
